Clinical Terminologist

The Clinical Terminologist works as part of the team responsible for creation and maintenance of IMO’s rapidly expanding clinical terminology content, which is used by hundreds of thousands of clinicians worldwide. This team includes clinical and non-clinical terminologists, coding professionals, tool developers, and database experts. This is an ideal position for a clinician who enjoys detailed analytical work, has a passion for language and precise, clear verbal expression of ideas, loves to learn, and wishes to make a real difference in health care.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identification, evaluation, planning, and execution of projects to extend the scope and elevate the quality of IMO’s terminology offerings
  • Project ownership for terminology projects including analysis, clinical overview, and communication with customer and IMO business owners
  • Migration of customer term dictionaries to IMO terminology, including mapping and new term creation
  • Addressing customer term requests, including customer communication when needed
  • Reviewing updates to standardized terminologies and updating IMO terminology content as needed
  • Domain and terminology support for our sales and marketing organization
  • Data analysis and discovery using database tools including writing SQL queries
  • Active participation in staff meetings and development and documentation of processes and policies
  • Maintain professional domain knowledge

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

  • Degree in medicine (M.D. or D.O.), nursing, or other clinical discipline (e.g. N.P., P.A.-C, etc.)
  • 3+ years clinical experience
  • 3+ years terminology experience working with (e.g. developing, mapping to, etc.) standardized clinical vocabularies, including SNOMED-CT
  • Formal informatics training a strong plus
  • Deep understanding of nuances of language and meaning
  • Excellent knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform complex work with high attention to detail
  • Ability to conduct searches of medical and scientific literature
  • Willingness to lead projects and acquire new skills over time
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office and use of Microsoft Access-based tools
  • Experience with databases and knowledge of SQL a strong plus
